This reminiscence kit uses garden scents to support memory recall and conversation in aged care
A reminiscence kit for seniors that works through the sense of smell, the Garden Fragrant Memory Kit includes three specially selected garden fragrances and six smelling pots to prompt personal memories and group discussion. It’s well suited to activity sessions with people living with dementia, where scent can be a strong and accessible trigger for recollection. The kit also leaves room for fresh natural items from the garden, such as rose petals or lemon peel, to be added alongside the included fragrances.
What’s included
- 3 fragrance bottles
- 6 smelling pots
- 1 pack of cotton wool balls
- 1 question prompt card with 6 conversation questions
- 1 reusable plastic container
How to use this kit
Place a few drops of fragrance onto a cotton wool ball, set it inside a smelling pot, and invite participants to smell and respond. The question prompt card gives staff a ready starting point, and the kit’s notes suggest adding food or music to build on the atmosphere of the session.
- One-to-one sensory session: Sit with a resident and introduce each scent one at a time. Use the prompt card questions to guide a personal conversation about their garden memories, favourite plants, or outdoor routines.
- Small group activity: Pass the smelling pots around a group and invite each person to share what the scent reminds them of. No right or wrong answers keep the session relaxed and inclusive.
- Nature extension: Bring in fresh cuttings such as rose petals, herbs, or citrus peel to sit alongside the bottled fragrances, giving participants something tactile to handle as well as smell.
- Multi-sensory session: Pair the scents with garden-themed music or a simple morning tea to build a richer sensory environment around the activity.
- Seasonal programming: Use the kit as part of a spring or summer activity program, linking the garden theme to seasonal reminiscence topics such as vegetable patches, flower shows, or outdoor entertaining.
