This tabletop tile game supports dementia games and puzzles for aged care groups

Tabletop Tile Game – Qwirkle is a colour-and-shape matching game that works well in residential aged care and day programs. Players match brightly coloured tiles against a black background, which supports visual tracking and keeps the rules easy to follow. It’s a practical choice for lifestyle coordinators running group sessions with people living with dementia or those who benefit from structured, low-pressure play.

How to play

Players take turns placing tiles to build lines that share either a colour or a shape, with no duplicates allowed in a single line. Points are scored for each tile placed, and completing a full line of six tiles earns a bonus called a “Qwirkle”. The rules are straightforward enough to revisit each session without confusion.

What’s included

  • 108 wooden tiles, each 3 cm x 3 cm
  • Cloth drawstring storage bag
  • Instructions booklet

  • Colour-sort warm-up: Before starting the game, tip the tiles onto the table and ask players to sort them by colour. This low-pressure task eases participants into the session and supports visual discrimination.
  • Shape-only round: Simplify the game by asking players to match tiles by shape only, removing the colour variable. This works well for participants who find dual-rule play challenging.
  • Supported group play: A carer or coordinator joins as a non-scoring guide, helping players identify valid tile placements without taking over. This keeps the game moving and reduces frustration.
  • One-to-one session: Use a smaller subset of tiles for a shorter, quieter session with a single resident. Focus on turn-taking and conversation rather than scoring.
  • Tile-counting activity: At the end of a session, ask participants to count tiles by colour or shape as a closing activity, reinforcing the session’s pattern-recognition work.

  • Players: 2 to 4
  • Tile count: 108 wooden tiles
  • Tile size: 3 cm x 3 cm
  • Includes: Instructions booklet and cloth drawstring storage bag
  • Material: Wooden tiles with high-contrast colour-on-black design
